چکیده

In this paper we model the process of temporal adaptation of the human visual system to varying luminance conditions. An eye tracker is used to capture the location of an observer’s gaze in a high dynamic range image displayed on the screen. We apply a novel technique of eye tracker data filtering to avoid flickering caused by incorrect gaze estimation. Temporary adaptation luminance is then determined in the area surrounding the gaze point. We use its value to compress the high dynamic range image and display it on the low dynamic range display. The applied tone mapping technique uses a global compression curve in which location is shifted along the luminance axis according to a value of the adaptation luminance. This technique models the natural process of adaptation occurring in the human eyes, also taking into account the time-dependent visual adaptation to dark and bright backgrounds.

Attention orienting by eye gaze and arrows reveals flexibility to environmental changes.

This study aimed to evaluate the difference in non-predictive cues between gaze and arrows in attention orienting. Attention orienting was investigated with gaze or arrows as separate cues in a simple condition (i.e., block design) in Experiment 1 and in an unpredictable condition (i.e., randomized design) in Experiment 2. Two kinds of sound (voice and tone) stimuli were used as targets. Result...

Impact of Tone Mapping in High Dynamic Range Image Compression

Tone mapping or range reduction is often used in High Dynamic Range (HDR) visual signal compression to take advantage of the existing image/video coding architectures. Thus, it is important to study the impact of tone mapping on the visual quality of decompressed HDR visual signals. To our knowledge, most of the existing studies focus only on the quality loss in the resultant low dynamic range ...

Mapping Functions in Gaze Tracking

Eye gaze is one of the powerful modes for interaction with the computer. Gaze estimation systems compute the direction of eye gaze. The gaze region on the screen determines the focus and attention of an individual. The gaze tracking systems consists of two major functionalities, feature extraction and determination of gaze mapping functions. The features are the parameters that characterize the...

Self make-up: the influence of self-referential processing on attention orienting

For humans, both eye gaze and arrows serve as powerful signals for orienting attention. Recent studies have shown important differences between gaze and arrows in attention orienting; however, the mechanisms underlying these differences are not known. One such mechanism may be self-referential processing. To investigate this possibility, we trained participants to associate two cues (a red and ...

Objective Quality Assessment and Optimization for High Dynamic Range Image Tone Mapping

Tone mapping operators aim to compress high dynamic range (HDR) images to low dynamic range ones so as to visualize HDR images on standard displays. Most existing works were demonstrated on specific examples without being thoroughly tested on wellestablished and subject-validated image quality assessment models. A recent tone mapped image quality index (TMQI) made the first attempt on objective...
